This Black Music Month, Tiny Desk honors the anniversaries of landmark albums which have formed the course of music and tradition.
CeCe Winans‘ voice transcends style, race and generations — one thing extremely uncommon within the gospel and Christian music realms. Her Tiny Desk live performance, which celebrates the thirtieth anniversary of her solo debut Alone in His Presence, is a shifting journey via the numerous eras of her monumental profession.
Winans laughed when she instructed me, “Ashley, you had me working at present!” She dusted off songs she hadn’t carried out in a long time to craft this second. (And that is with out even touching the groundbreaking work she did alongside her brother BeBe Winans.) From the joyous name and response of “Pray” to the gang’s audible gasp on the opening line of “Alabaster Field” to the heartfelt “Goodness of God” singalong, this efficiency is not simply nostalgic, it is a reminder of Winans’ enduring religious and cultural impression. She is likely one of the most adorned gospel artists of all time — witness a dwelling legend take the Tiny Desk to church.
